The YWCA Halifax Youth Advisory Council. Mount Saint Vincent University Girls Conference Workshop: “Pop Culture Power”

The YWCA Halifax Youth Advisory Council (YAC) have planned a workshop to present and facilitate at the annual Mount Saint Vincent University Girls Conference. The conference involves 300+ young women and girls from the Halifax Regional Municipality between grades 7-10. The name of the workshop is “Pop Culture Power”, and will be focused on raising awareness around the influence of popular culture and media in the lives of girls and young women. This workshop was wholly developed by the youth involved in the YAC, and will be a great opportunity for them to discuss this element of our culture with their peers. The workshop is geared towards providing youth with the tools to be conscious consumers of media in all forms, including social media. One of the central themes of this session will be around the recent prominence of sexualized violence in mass media, and how girls and young women can practice self-care and mindful consumption in the wake of these developments. The workshop will involve an interactive art piece, where participants are guided through creating a self-care guide for engaging with media.

    When: Friday, March 31, 2017 from 4:00-6:00PM

Our Young Women’s Community Action Day event is a Self-Care Celebration.  During this time, a member of our Youth Collective will discuss the importance of self-care, engage in self-care activities, and brainstorm on the barriers to self-care as a group!  Judy Murphy of the Elizabeth Fry Society will also do a brief presentation on mindfulness activities.  The inspiration for this stemmed from informal conversations with the Youth Collective on how they rarely take time to care for themselves, so there has been an impressive amount of participation in the planning and preparation!

    Where: Bow Valley

    When: Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Our action day is focused around sharing the messages and stories we discovered during our youth council activities with our friends, families, and communities.

On Tuesday, March 28th, 2017, participants of the Whyte Museum presentation and tour will engage members of their communities in conversations around what being a woman in the Bow Valley means to them. Conversations focused on: meaning making of the history of women in the Bow Valley, what this legacy means for us as young women in the Bow Valley, how we can carry the lessons of these women’s lives forward in our lives, and what we can learn from these women who came before us about connection to our community and country?
